INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR FUNCTIONAL ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCE
OUR AIM IS FOR YOUR TREATMENT TO BE COMPLETED AS WELL AND AS EASILY FOR YOU AS POSSIBLE. FOR THIS TO SUCCEED, YOUR APPLIANCE MUST BE WORN EXACTLY AS INSTRUCTED.
The appliance must be worn as near full time as possible and as an absolute minimum 12-14 hours each day. You will not be able to wear it to eat, play sport, or certain school activities such as singing, language lessons etc. In order to help you keep track you may be given a wear chart, which must be kept up to date and brought on every visit.
Both your teeth and the appliance must be cleaned after every meal, and last thing at night with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
The appliance is designed to `stretch ' your mouth and jaw in order to make it grow. It may feel a little sore to begin with and you should build up the hours gradually over the first few weeks. If any part of the appliance makes you persistently sore either at the early stage or later, please telephone and we will see you as soon as we can. If at all possible continue to wear the appliance; otherwise your teeth will tend to return to their original positions. Appliances breakages will add to the time it takes to treat you. These appliances are expensive to make and easily distorted and broken. You will, therefore, be given a container and your appliance should be kept in this whenever it is not in your mouth
